Talking EMOTIONS from the Inside Out (Pun Intended)!

I had been holding off on adding Inside Out inspired accessories to the Pixar Pals collection in the shop until I had time to write this blog post because as many of you know, mental health is such an important part of my life, both personally and professionally. I created these new pins based on my research on emotions and my conviction that all emotions are vital to the human experience!

Much like what is suggested in the movie Inside Out, I have learned that all of our emotions are useful tools that are necessary for survival and our overall well-being. Unfortunately, many of us grow up being taught to label emotions as "good" and "bad" or we are told that certain emotions are not acceptable to feel or express. I strongly believe that this approach to emotions leads to difficulties with anxiety, depression, and low  self-esteem.

This blog post is dedicated to sharing what I've learned about emotions and to introduce the new Inside Out pins in the shop. There is a message to take from each of them about emotions! I am also excited to be donating a portion of the profits of the Inside Out inspired items to an organization dedicated to serving young adults with depression, addiction, self-injury, and suicide called To Write Love On Her Arms.

The Problem With Labels
Labeling is something we all do and to some extent we cannot escape our need to label things and experiences because that is how we make sense of the world. The problem is, labeling also leads to bias, stereotypes, and much more. When it comes to emotions, labeling them as "good" and "bad" usually leads to avoiding the "bad" feelings and seeking the "good" ones. Unfortunately, this is just completely unrealistic because those "bad" feelings exist whether or not you acknowledge them and avoidance can actually prolong suffering. One of things I encourage my clients to do is find new labels for emotions as a way to decrease avoidance. I tend to speak of emotions as either "comfortable" or "uncomfortable." However, I've had clients be really creative and use forms of potatoes to label their emotions (e.g. mashed potatoes were "sad," fries were"angry," tater tots were "joy"). Hey, whatever works! This is why I love my job!

Sadness & Joy
Usually, I find that most people label sadness, anger, and fear in the "bad" emotion category because let's face it, they aren't fun to feel.

Let's start with sadness, who is by far my favorite character in the film. The pin featuring Sadness in the shop is coupled with Joy.

The reason for this is because sadness and joy are mutually exclusive emotions. One cannot exist without the other. If we never felt sad, how would we know what joy is, and vice versa? The quote on this pin is from one of my favorite authors, Jonathan Safran Foer, and it is one of my absolute favorites. While being sad about something can really suck, if you protect yourself from ever feeling it, you're also protecting yourself from experiencing joy. In the movie, Sadness becomes such a valuable character (which makes me SO HAPPYYYYY!!! Irony!) The function of sadness is to slow us down when we need it in order to appropriately grieve or make meaning out of a situation, whether it be a loss, failure, or disappointment. Sadness can also indicate a need for rest and comfort from others. Sadness can create connection with others add dimension to the meaning of our experiences.

So the next time you feel sad, before you reach for that tub of ice cream, glass of wine, or start browsing Amazon for stuff to buy (I'm speaking from experience here!), I encourage you to ask yourself what you need in that moment and to remind yourself that this is a necessary, temporary and useful state of being.

Another emotion that gets a bad rap is anger. I consistently hear people say that they are "angry" people because it seems that we tend to equate anger with being out of control or violent. The truth is, WE ARE ALL ANGRY PEOPLE BECAUSE ANGER IS AN ADAPTIVE NECESSARY EMOTION! That was me using my anger about people not allowing themselves to feel anger. We have classes for "anger management" and I absolutely hate that term. Anger is not something that needs to be "managed," it is an emotion that needs to be acknowledged and channeled in a useful way.

The Anger inspired pin the shop focuses on the function of anger as a tool for empowerment and change. Anger functions as a protective emotion to help us survive in the face of a threat. We feel anger when we are not being treated the way we deserve to be or we or someone else we love is being wronged. It sharpens our focus and signals that we need to stand up for ourselves! Unfortunately, when anger is extinguished or avoided, it often leads us to express it in unhelpful ways like posting vague passive aggressive Facebook posts about how pissed we are or punching someone in the face. It can also lead a person to turn that anger toward themselves and internalize it rather than acknowledging the injustice that has occurred.

Admitting you are angry does not mean you are an aggressive person. It means that you know you or someone else deserves better. When you acknowledge this, it can be empowering, energizing and motivating. Anger can drive us toward goals and create awareness of injustice, leading to PRODUCTIVE ACTION! Next time you feel angry, take a step back and observe this anger and figure out what it's telling you. Then explore the actions you can take that will either improve the situation or empower yourself to change (no punching people please! I don't want people to be messaging me blaming me for their black eyes ha ha!)

And now for good ol' fear. He cracks me up in the movie!!

Fear is another tough one because it is extremely uncomfortable and can often lead to difficulties with anxiety. While both fear and anxiety produce a stress response, anxiety is more of a worry about an unknown threat while fear is about a clear, definite threat. The problem is, we often experience the same physical responses to both so it gets super confusing! The function of fear is to protect us from experiencing pain. If you touch a hot stove as a kid and get burned, you feel fear, which then leads you to avoid touching a hot stove again! The problem is when you get rejected by someone or experience a huge failure, the fear can also kick in to protect us from ever experiencing that again. When we fear psychological pain, that usually leads to anxiety or avoidance. We do everything we can to avoid being vulnerable with people or we try to control every aspect of a situation to avoid failing. This is when fear needs to be faced.

Being "brave" does not mean you are fearless or worry-free. It means you are TERRIFIED, but you are doing the thing that scares you anyway because it can lead to something amazing like an awesome job or a connection with a new person. And let me tell you, it feels SO good to face your fears! When you face something that makes you anxious or nervous, it usually means you're growing. I know, what a pain in the ass, haha!

I chose the quote for the Fear pin because it is something he says in the movie, but it also speaks to the function of fear keeping us alive and safe! Also, this quote stood out to me because for a portion of people in the world, being alive for another day is a thing to be thankful for. This pin serves as a reminder that there are people everywhere who are facing both psychological and physical threats to their lives because of mental illness, trauma, discrimination, oppression, or lack of basic needs like food, water, and shelter.

Believe or not, disgust is not just some hilarious character voiced by Mindy Kaling with the best one-liners! Disgust is also a very necessary and vital emotion. First, it protects us from disease by causing us to be repelled by rotten food or germs. It also keeps us looking good by motivating us to engage in good hygiene practices because body odor ain't cute and I'm pretty sure no one finds it attractive when another person has a bunch of food stuck in their teeth. Disgust can also signal that something is occurring that is inhumane or violates human dignity, which leads us to create social distance from certain acts.

So this pin is mean to remind us of 1) how amazing and hilarious this character is 2) that disgust is keeping  you clean, ethical, and healthy!

I hope you all enjoyed the little background behind these new pins in the shop! There's also a cute mix and match earring set! Check them all out in the Pixar Pals collection of the shop and help me donate to an organization that I care so much about!!

Until Next Time!

Honeymoon In Europe

Now that I finally posted pics of the wedding I can finally share some of my honeymoon photos with y'all!!! I LOVED planning my honeymoon because it was seriously a dream come true. Paul had never been to Europe and after I went with girlfriends several years back, I always wanted to return with him. It was seriously the best trip I have ever taken in my entire life and I just feel lucky that I got to experience it and that I get to share it with you!

We chose Paris, France and Venice, Italy for our trip because they are both romantic cities and places we have always talked about visiting! I have been to Paris but not Venice so the second leg of the trip was super exciting for me.

So first stop...Paris! We left the day after our wedding, which in hindsight I realize wasn't a great idea haha. We were pretty exhausted but luckily we were able to sleep in because we took a red eye flight so we'd end up in Paris Monday morning. We slept on the plane as much as we could and arrived at our hotel in the early afternoon.

THIS...is our friggin ADORABLE hotel - Hotel Le 123 Sebastopol - Astotel.

It was movie themed and so cute I had to take pics to share with you!

They had a "tea time" every day with coffee and tea and DESSERT. Here commences my journey  into a week full of bread, chocolate, cookies, pastries, croissants, and all of the other wonderful carbs that exist in the world. #HEAVEN

Okay so how cute is our room?! This little vanity was claimed by me right away haha! I wish I could've fit this chair and mirror in my suitcase to take home.  Although even if I could have it probably would have been frowned upon by the hotel owners right? =P

So we got to our hotel and said we were going to take a "little nap" because I booked a tour of the Eiffel Tower at 4:30 p.m. This little nap turned into a very deep sleep that we woke up from around 3:30p.m. WOOPS. So we missed the tour and I felt like a zombie but we headed over to the Eiffel Tower to just see it and hang out before we went to visit my cousin and her family who live in Paris. It was just as beautiful as ever! I also planned my #OOTD around it so I insisted we go even though we were exhausted. If you're wondering...yes I planned every single outfit like 6 months prior to even going on  the trip. LOL. I feel bad for myself.

My now official instagram husband took this picture for me!

My first Paris #OOTD

Shoes: Chase & Chloe
Belt: Pinup Girl Clothing
Sunglasses: Forever 21

 Trying to be artsy fartsy

Due to fatigue and having a glass of Rose on an empty stomach I got a little delirious and bought a selfie stick (or I should I say I made Paul buy me one) from one of the guys walking around selling stuff ha ha ha! I thought I would share this wonderful gem with you because I was very excited to use my new gadget.

Now for Day 2! Our first breakfast in Paris was at this lovely little cafe called Republique of Coffee. Paul had pancakes and eggs and I had avocado toast with pomegranate. OMG AMAZING. Also the iced cappuccino was to die for! Oh I also took a chocolate croissant to go, don't judge.

Next stop, the Palace of Versailles! It was my second time visiting and Paul's first and he loved it! This is one of my favorite places in the world!

Gimme that wallpaper!

The garden is by far my favorite within Versailles.

A pic of us being cute.

#OOTD time! I had been waiting to wear this Paris print dress from Lindy Bop all year! Shoes from Amazon! These sandal wedges were super comfortable btw!

Feeling regal n' stuff.

At night we had tickets to see a show at the Moulin Rouge, which has been on my bucket list for YEARS. Of course, I had to wear a red dress for the occasion. I got this on Amazon as well because I have an amazon shopping issue =P
Me in front of the cute piano in the lobby of our hotel!

The only picture I was able to take and this was before we got in the actual theater because photography is banned. But how cute is this?

So beautiful at night. I loved every minute of being there although I have to admit the show wasn't spectacular as I had imagined it would be. I loved the decor and the music and the side acts but the actual Moulin Rouge dancers all looked like model clones of one another who had mediocre dance skills. It felt like they were chosen more for their body type rather than talent. This made me sad but it is what it is and I have no regrets about going to the show!

Day 3 in Paris - DISNEYLAND!!!!!!

Kind of obsessed with the entrance. Like how adorableeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!?

My outfit matched this cute little dessert shop on Main Street! So of course, I had to take a pic!
Shoes: Chase & Chloe
Cardigan: Mak

This castle is SO BEAUTIFUL.

Being cute again in front of the castle.

This is my attempt at taking a cool hip photo like the cool kids do on instagram.

Had to give you a close up of my macaron ears from Shop House of Mouse on Etsy! Jess is by far one of the most talented ladies I know and I love everything she makes! The pin is from my shop!

Even in Paris I lose to Paul in this dang game.

Why can't you see my face in this pic? WELL.....I was TERRIFIED. LOL I go on Space Mountain all the time at home but I had never been on this one and I read that there was a loop in it and I was so panicky before we went on the ride I almost walked out of line. Yes, I'm a scaredy cat! I didn't look up during most of the ride and now I regret it because it was shorter than our Space Mountain and was really not bad at all.

The line was super long to meet Donald and we didn't have time but I did snag a quick pic of him because I LOVE THIS DUCK.

The Wonderland decor in Disney Paris is LEGIT.

Excited much Melanie? LOL

Another shot of these perfect ears!

The teacups are SO CUTE IN DISNEY PARIS!

We only went on one ride in the Walt Disney Studios park because we were exhausted....and that ride was TOWER BECAUSE DUH.

It was so fun and I missed it so much! I'm sad though because I thought it was going to be in French and it was in English. At least I got to say "IN TONIGHT'S EPISODE YOU ARE THE STAR" super loud along with the video in the beginning part and annoy everyone in the room muahaha!

So that concludes my pictures of Disney Paris because I didn't take as many as I wanted to but it was a blast! We were just soooo tired and didn't do as much as we could have so I definitely want to visit again!

For our last day in Paris, we had plans to visit the Louvre & Champs-Élysées so we first stopped at the Eiffel Tower once more to have some delicious pastries and coffee! Knowing that I was going to be visit Laduree later in the day, I wore my macaron print dress from Modcloth! How beautiful is the sky behind the tower!?

Paul and I on the Batobus on the Seine River headed to the Louvre!

I took a bunch of pics from the Louvre but the one I love the most is with the Mona Lisa =P We took so many wrong turns trying to find her that it took us an hour but it was worth it haha!

I also took ridiculous snap chats of some of the paintings and got a lot of dirty looks from people. Sorry not sorry.

hahaha don't judge me.

We had amazing crepes at this little family owned business and they were so delicious! The owners were so kind, which is not something you always find when you're traveling so it was greatly appreciated!

We then took a pedicab to the Champs-Élysées (so much fun! Also a little scary lol)

We spent some time shopping and I ended up buying this fancy schmancy cape from Zara and I felt super bougie, hence the caption on this snap chat Paul took of me.

Got an assortment of macarons in this adorable rainbow box that is now sitting in my office as decor!

After that long day we headed back to our hotel and got room service for dinner and went to bed early because we had an early flight to Venice the next day!

The moment we entered Venice I fell in love. It is absolutely one of the most beautiful places I have ever been.

My gondolier inspired #OOTD for our first day in Venice!
Hat: H&M
Top: Amazon
Pants: Sidecca
Purse: Target

Pizza from Rossopomodoro in Venice. IT WAS AMAZING.

So I fell in love with this sparkling red wine called Peschella. It was seriously so good I went back for more and bought a couple to go to take home with me because I couldn't find it online anywhere so that I could buy it when we got back to the states! Once I get obsessed with things there is no use trying to divert my attention y'all. I bought like 6 to take home and ended up paying more at the airport because my suitcase was too heavy LOL.

Our fun Gondola ride! See my twin in the back?

 Feelin' cute haha

In the early evening I booked a wine and food tour through Viator for us. It was so much fun! We stopped at all these local spots and had some very interesting food including deep fried mozarella with ham, stuffed olives, sardines on polenta (not my fave eek!) and delicious prosecco! We bought a bottle to take home to drink for our 1st anniversary.

I know it's hard to see how narrow this is...but this is literally how tiny the streets are in Venice. This is such a unique city! This is also the reason why it was super hard to navigate at first. I didn't realize some of the alleys were actual streets so we would pass them and miss the turns we were supposed to take. What an adventure!

Our hotel had complimentary breakfast and so THIS HAPPENED. Cheesecake for breakfast FOR THE WIN!

On our second day in Venice, I booked a tour of the Murano and Burano islands.

Such beauty! The island of Murano, which is famous for its history in glass making.

Murano Island!

Me in a little alley in Murano. I wore this outfit because I was ready for our next stop, BURANO. You'll see ;)
Outfit Details:

Skirt: ModCloth
Shoes: Chase & Chloe
On the way from Murano to Burano we passed the smallest little island I have ever seen which I think was abandoned? I hope??? haha!

Burano! This island has been on my bucket list for years since I saw a picture of it on pinterest. This island is famous for its colorful fisherman's houses and for lace making.

Lace handkerchiefs

These are handmade! In the shop a lady was hand sewing and it was so awesome to watch. I ended up buying a cute little detachable lace peter pan collar that I still need to wear.

As I was planning my OOTD for this day, I came across this skirt in my closet and realized that it was MEANT TO BE that I bought this skirt from ModCloth awhile back. The colors make me so happy!

 I love this vibrant blue!

Paul's turn to take an OOTD. LOL this made me laugh so hard I just had to share it!
Outfit details:
Shirt: The Hundreds
Shorts: Somewhere they sell men's shorts
Shoes: Nike, I'm assuming?

I was just in heaven and in awe the entire time.

Back in Venice

Gussied up for a fancy dinner! I got this dress at one of the shops in Venice.

I am so sad because I can't remember the name of this restaurant but it was great! We had excellent wine and pasta and the cheese plate was soooo good.

Piazza San Marco!

So I am sharing this because PIGEONS ARE MY ENEMY. The entire time we were in Venice they kept flying around every where and I swear one almost swiped me in the head. Paul made fun of me for it incessantly so on our last day I was like screw this, I'm facing my fear...and I DID haha! These pigeons have no fear of anything. I'm proud of myself but I also still hate pigeons, sorry.

Our last afternoon before heading back home!

Such a PERFECT honeymoon! This is the last photo we took on our trip.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read this and view my photos of the trip. It means a lot to me to be able to share it with others!
